“The Lord is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?”
A stronghold is “a place that has been fortified (made strong) so as to protect it against attack.
“The Lord is my light”- He casts out the darkness and lights the way for us.
“The Lord is my salvation”- by no other Name are we saved but by the Name of Jesus!
“Whom shall I fear?”- Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?”
“The Lord is the stronghold of my life.” If a stronghold is a “place that has been made strong so as to protect it against attack” and the Lord is our stronghold, does that not mean that in Him, we are safe. He makes us strong. He “remains the strength of my heart (Psalm 73:26.) He gives us the strength that we need to endure.
“We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.”
-2 Corinthians 10:4
Satan will do anything in his power to deceive us, to keep us from remembering Whose we are. He wants us to rely on “human reasoning” and what we can understand rather than seeking God’s infinite wisdom.
“He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
False arguments/ fallacies are “errors in reasoning, appeal, or language that renders a conclusion invalid.” Satan presents God’s truths to use as questions so that we ourselves question their validity. For example, “you think that God still loves you? Even after what you’ve done?” Satan will use our own minds against us which is why we must “Fix our thoughts on what is true and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8.) Only by “God’s mighty weapons” can these strongholds be “knocked down” and replaced.
“They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds (Psalm 18:45.) Because David had placed His faith in God, he had been victorious in every battle. His enemies had lost their courage because they knew that the God of Israel was on his side. They came trembling from the places they had made their fortress and found their strength and protection. When faced with the power of God, they recognized their weakness. They trembled in fear at a God so powerful. They had no choice but to surrender. When we consider just how much He relentlessly loves us, we are humbly forced to surrender. Who are we?
“He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken (Psalm 62:2). When we make Christ our fortress, our stronghold, we will never be shaken. Not shaken by fear or doubt or worry because anywhere that Christ is, these things are unnecessary and unwelcome. “The Lord is the stronghold of my life.” He is stronger than whatever is holding on to you. “He holds you with His strong right hand (Psalm 63:8). In Joshua 1:5, He promises that He will never fail us or abandon us. So stay strong and hold onto the Lord and His promises.
